The SUP School Emergency Action Plan 2024 (EAP) If instructor is incapable of carrying out the EAP due to injury etc, YOU must follow these instructions:

First Aid Kit - in Instructors dry bag Whistle and Knife on Instructor’s person Tow Rope - on front of Instructors board Contact details in Instructors dry bag If you see (or are informed that there is) someone in difficulty in the sea, river or on land, then you must immediately notify the instructor in charge who must:

1. Assess the situation. Is it wet or dry? Minor or major?

2. Ensure the safety of any individual (or group) that you are supervising. Paddlers not involved in assisting the incident should paddle on knees to nearest safe shoreline and exit the water.

3. Deal with the incident and/or remove from water (without endangering yourself or others).

4. Call the lifeguards or other suitable Emergency Services DIAL 999 or 112 SAY: -“Coast Guard” (for wet) Or -“Ambulance” (for dry) Inform them of the following (the 3p’s):

● POSITION - eg. Poetry Pier, Brownsea Island ● PEOPLE - Number of people, age, details involved in incident ● PROBLEM - Nature of the incident. Stand by to carry out emergency services instructions. If the instructor is injured and you don’t have a phone (instructors phone will be on their person) then send a competent person to the nearest phone and call the relevant emergency services (3p’s and get them to return and relay any info.) whilst you enlist any suitable help to:

1. Affect the rescue of the patient. DO NOT put you or the lives of others would be rescuers at unnecessary risk. Use gloves, eye protection and facemasks if possible. All equipment is in the first aid kit in the Instructor’s dry bag.

2. Remove the person to a safe area NOTE: victims of possible spinal injuries should not be moved unless absolutely necessary.

3. Diagnose extent of injury and treat for shock.

4. Take appropriate action dependent on the nature of treatment / aftercare that the person requires. In addition to gloves, eye protection and facemask, ANY CPR must be done with pocket masks or no breaths.
